Effectiveness of NEWater

Why is NEWater the answer to the global shortage of water?

·        It’s essentially recycled waste water.

·        Water can now be recycled for use over and over again.

·        Doesn’t rely on rainfall
o   Advantage since climate change is affecting precipitation, as explained in the “Global Water Shortage” section.

·        Technology can be replicated for use in several areas in Singapore, to meet provisional percentages of the Singapore water supply.

·        Can also be globally adapted to aid global water shortage

·        Cheaper than desalinated water.

·        Requires less energy to produce.

·        Although hesitancy to drink NEWater may exist, it is safe drinking water. After more than some “20,000 analyses on the physical, chemical and microbiological aspects of NEWater,” the expertise test results exceed the USEPA and WHO guidelines, and NEWater is said to be even cleaner than normal tap water.

What are the implications/limitations behind the use of NEWater?

·         There is a fear of the prospect of the Singapore public’s rejection to the idea of drinking recycled waste water. If the consumers/citizens are not ready to drink this water, then Singapore will not be able to fulfil the water demand in Singapore. This is because Singapore has invested and designated a large percentage of up to 40% of Singapore’s water supply to NEWater.(Chew)

·         NEWater is currently being used for more non-potable water usages, such as industrial and commercial work, in which ultra-clean water is necessary for efficiency/quality. As a result, NEWater may be efficient for industrial purposes, but the question arises, is it a solution to the potable water shortages in Singapore and possibly in a global context? (FAQ)

·         During the process of the NEWater treatment, most minerals are removed, and therefore the taste is quite different to normal water, which may be unattractive to the public. (Ng)
